Balls, Not Just For Bouncing
By Kristin Auble
The other day my physical therapist tells me; “Your balls are your best friend, they’re easy to carry and you can use them anytime.” And he is absolutely right! His words really got me thinking, why be so selfish with my balls? Shouldn’t everyone be able to enjoy them? Yes! Yes, they should! So it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to my balls. ENJOY!
First some simple instructions.
- Contain them.
When not in use, make sure to tuck them away in a dry sealed container.
This will help keep them clean and fresh whenever you are ready to use them.
- Clean them.
If they do get dirty you have a few options here. If it’s just a not so fresh smell that is the problem and no visible scuffs, I recommend giving those balls a little spritz with some perfume or cologne. Since you will likely be taking them out in yoga class, I always do, you should probably keep it earthy. I suggest spraying them with a bit of sandalwood, or eau de Tibetan mountain temple. Then let them air out for a few hours.
***WARNING: Stay away from Patchouli scents, as you don’t want to be labeled as “hippie balls”.
If balls get visibly dirty and you simply can no longer avoid it, then by all means wash them with gentle soap and water. I would avoid this step until the last possible minute though, because they take quite a long time to dry and you really don’t want to have them out of circulation that long.
- Size matters.
Make sure your balls are the right size for you. Mine are about medium size, but others prefer small, or large balls.
Here are a few tips on how to use them.
- Step on them.
Using one foot at a time to maintain balance, gently roll the soles or your feet over them. Be careful not to hurt yourself by putting too much pressure on your balls.
- Sit on them.
Experiment a little bit here and find a spot where it feels just right, then hang out for a while sitting on your balls. You can sit on your balls in Baddha Konasana, Paschimottananasa, or my favorite Upavistha Konasana. Breath into any initial discomfort that you may feel, allowing yourself to relax into it.
- Tape them together.
At first this may seem a little bit strange, but it really helps keep your balls close together, so one doesn’t pop out when you are rolling on them with great force and vigor. Then roll up and down on them while lying on your yoga mat. Balls feel great on your back and neck.
- Play with them.
In order to really get the fullest potential from your balls, you must experiment. Get to know your balls, get comfortable handling them, don’t be afraid to take them out and use them in new places and exciting new ways. There are so many different options to use your balls, find out what works for you.
- Share them.
Every time I take my balls out someone asks me about them and inevitably wants to use them. Don’t be shy or stingy, share your balls with your friends. They will appreciate it.

And lastly make sure to bring your balls with you, wherever you go, as you never know when there will be an opportunity to use your balls!

I have only one ball — I use it to massage my foot and calf, which has helped a lot following my ankle injury.
A friend of mine puts ‘em in a sock and rolls out his back. Balls are good for so many things!
